Air Fryer Chicken Tenders with a Crunchy Panko Coating
Air fryer chicken tenders cook at 200°C / 400°F for 10–12 minutes, flipped halfway. Thick tenders need 12–14 minutes and frozen breaded ones 12–15. The chicken is done at 74°C / 165°F.
Tenderloins are already the right size and shape, so the only real work is the breading: flour, egg, then panko pressed on firmly.
For bite-size pieces, see Air Fryer Chicken Nuggets.
Ingredients
For the Chicken Tenders
- 🍗 500 g (1.1 lb) chicken tenderloins or breast cut into strips
- 🧂 ½ teaspoon salt
- 🌶️ ¼ teaspoon black pepper
For the Breading
- 🌾 40 g (⅓ cup) all-purpose flour
- 🥚 2 eggs, beaten
- 🍞 80 g (1 cup) panko breadcrumbs
- 🧀 20 g (¼ cup) grated Parmesan
- 🧄 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 🌶️ 1 teaspoon paprika
- 🫒 Oil spray
Dipping Sauces
- 🍯 Honey mustard
- 🥫 Barbecue sauce
- 🥄 Ranch dressing
Equipment
- 3 shallow bowls
- Tongs or a fork
- Oil spray bottle
Setting Up the Breading Station
Line up three shallow dishes before you touch the chicken:
- Seasoned flour. A thin, dry first coat gives the egg something to hold on to.
- Beaten egg. Let the excess drip off, or the crumbs clump.
- Panko. Press the tender into the crumbs on both sides.
Keep one hand for the dry dishes and the other for the egg. It sounds fussy, but it stops your fingers from getting breaded along with the chicken.
Cooking the Tenders
Season the Chicken
Pat the chicken strips dry and season them with salt and pepper.
Prepare the Breading Station
Put flour in one bowl, beaten eggs in another, and mix panko, Parmesan, garlic powder, and paprika in a third.
Coat the Tenders
Dip each piece in flour, then egg, then press it into the panko mixture until fully coated.
Spray with Oil
Arrange the tenders in a single layer in the basket and spray them lightly with oil.
Air Fry the Tenders
Cook at 200°C / 400°F for 10–12 minutes, flipping halfway and spraying the other side.
Check Doneness
The air fryer chicken tenders are ready when golden and the inside reaches 74°C / 165°F.
Serve
Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauces.
- Chicken must reach 74°C / 165°F in the thickest part.
- Spray both sides with oil; dry breading stays pale and powdery.
- Press the panko on firmly so the coating doesn’t fall off.
- Cook in batches so the tenders don’t touch.
