Air Fryer Tater Tots – Extra Crispy from Frozen
Air fryer tater tots cook from frozen at 200°C / 400°F for 12–15 minutes, shaken every 5 minutes. They come out golden and crunchy on every side and soft in the middle, noticeably crispier than oven-baked tots and without a pan of oil. A light spray of oil is optional, because most frozen tots have already been par-fried in the factory.
Tots are one of those foods that seem made for the air fryer. They are small, they tumble easily when you shake the basket, and their rough surface crisps fast in moving hot air. The only real mistake you can make is putting too many in at once.
Air Fryer Tater Tots Time Chart
| Amount / Type | Temperature | Time |
| Frozen, half basket (about 300 g) | 200°C / 400°F | 12–14 minutes |
| Frozen, full basket (about 500 g) | 200°C / 400°F | 15–18 minutes |
| Homemade tots (pre-chilled) | 200°C / 400°F | 14–16 minutes |
| Reheating | 190°C / 375°F | 3–4 minutes |
A full basket takes longer and needs more shaking. If you are feeding more than two people, two smaller batches usually give a better result than one crowded one.

What You Need
- 450 g (1 lb) frozen tater tots
- Oil spray (optional)
- ¼ teaspoon salt or seasoning salt
That is everything for the basic version. The seasoning ideas further down add more flavor without extra work.
How to Cook Frozen Tater Tots in the Air Fryer
1. Keep Them Frozen
Do not thaw the tots. Once they defrost, the potato inside softens and they lose their shape in the basket.
2. Fill the Basket Loosely
Pour them in as a single layer or a shallow double layer at most. Overfilling is the main reason tots come out pale and soft.
3. Air Fry and Shake
Cook at 200°C / 400°F for 12–15 minutes. Pull the basket out every 5 minutes and give it a firm shake so the tots turn over and every side meets the hot air.
4. Season Right Away
Tip the hot tots into a bowl and toss them with salt or seasoning while they are still steaming. The surface is slightly oily at that moment, so the seasoning sticks.
- Check the package: most frozen tots are already cooked in oil, so extra oil is optional.
- Small air fryers may need two batches; half a basket cooks a few minutes faster.
- Tots are very hot inside straight after cooking, so let them cool for a minute before giving them to children.
- Aerosol cooking sprays with lecithin can damage a non-stick basket over time; an oil mister is safer.
Seasoning Ideas
- Garlic Parmesan: garlic powder and finely grated Parmesan.
- Cajun: Cajun seasoning and a squeeze of lime.
- Ranch: a spoonful of dry ranch seasoning mix.
- Chaat masala: a desi twist with chaat masala and a pinch of red chili powder.
Make Loaded Totchos
Tots also make a great sharing snack. Cook them as above, then pile them into an oven-safe dish that fits inside your air fryer. Top with grated cheddar, cooked bacon and sliced jalapeños, and air fry for 2–3 more minutes until the cheese melts. Finish with sour cream and spring onions. Why Are My Tots Soggy?
Nearly always it is one of two things: the basket was too full, or the tots were thawed before cooking. A crowded basket traps steam, and steam is the opposite of crisp. Cook from frozen, keep them to one loose layer, and if they still seem soft at the end, give them 2 more minutes rather than raising the heat.
