Air Fryer Tortellini – Crispy Breaded Cheese Bites with Dipping Sauce
Breaded air fryer tortellini cook at 200°C / 400°F for 7–9 minutes when you start with refrigerated tortellini. Frozen ones take 10–12 minutes and mini tortellini about 6–7.
Think of them as a bite-size cousin of toasted ravioli: cheese tortellini dipped in egg, rolled in seasoned crumbs and air fried until the outside crunches and the cheese inside turns soft and warm. They disappear fast at parties, and they take less than 20 minutes from fridge to plate. For the original, larger version, see our Air Fryer Toasted Ravioli.
Which Tortellini Work (and Which Do Not)
| Type | Works? | Notes |
| Refrigerated (fresh) | Yes, best choice | Bread and cook straight from the pack |
| Frozen | Yes | Do not thaw; add 2–3 minutes |
| Dried (shelf-stable, hard) | Only if boiled first | Raw dried pasta will not soften in hot air |
Fresh refrigerated tortellini are already soft and only need heating through, which is why they work so well here. Dried tortellini are a different product: they need water to cook, so boil them first, drain and dry them well, then coat and air fry.
Ingredients
For the Tortellini
- 250 g (9 oz) refrigerated cheese tortellini
- 2 eggs, beaten
- 60 g (¾ cup) Italian breadcrumbs
- 25 g (¼ cup) grated Parmesan
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon dried basil
- Oil spray
For Dipping
- Warm marinara sauce
- Basil pesto
- Alfredo sauce or garlic aioli
You will also need two shallow bowls and a fork or slotted spoon for lifting the tortellini out of the egg.
How to Make Crispy Tortellini
1. Mix the Coating
Stir the breadcrumbs, Parmesan, garlic powder and basil together in a shallow bowl.
2. Dip in Egg
Toss a handful of tortellini in the beaten egg, then lift them out with a fork and let the extra drip back into the bowl. Too much egg makes the coating patchy.
3. Coat in Crumbs
Roll them in the crumb mixture, pressing gently so the crumbs stick to every side, including the folds.
4. Arrange and Spray
Spread them in the basket in a single layer and spray lightly but evenly with oil. Without oil the crumbs stay pale and dusty.
5. Air Fry
Cook at 200°C / 400°F for 7–9 minutes, shaking the basket halfway, until they are deep golden and crisp.
6. Serve
Serve right away with warm sauces for dipping.
- Use refrigerated tortellini; dried ones must be boiled before coating.
- Cook frozen tortellini straight from the freezer and add 2–3 minutes.
- Spray with oil or the crumbs will stay pale.
- The cheese filling gets very hot, so let them cool for a minute before eating.

Making Them for a Party
You can coat the tortellini up to 4 hours ahead and keep them on a tray in the fridge, uncovered, so the coating dries slightly. Cook them in batches as guests arrive; each batch is ready in under 10 minutes. Toothpicks make them easy to dip, and setting out two or three sauces in small bowls makes a simple plate feel generous.
Tips
Variations
- Spinach tortellini: use spinach and ricotta tortellini.
- Meat tortellini: try beef or prosciutto-filled tortellini.
- Spicy crumbs: add chili flakes and smoked paprika to the coating.
- Salad topper: use crispy tortellini on a Caesar salad instead of croutons.
