Air Fryer Pierogies – Crispy from Frozen in 12 Minutes
Air fryer pierogies cook straight from frozen at 200°C / 400°F for 10–12 minutes, shaken halfway. A light toss in oil is all they need to turn golden and crisp on the outside while the potato and cheese filling heats through and turns creamy. There is no pot of water to boil and no pan to stand over.
The usual way to cook frozen pierogies is to boil them and then fry them in butter, which means two pans and a fair bit of attention. The air fryer collapses that into one step. You lose a little of the soft, slippery texture of boiled dumplings, and gain a crisp, almost chip-like edge that most people end up preferring.

- 1 tablespoon olive oil or melted butter

How to Make Pierogies in the Air Fryer
1. Do Not Thaw
Take the pierogies straight from the freezer. Thawed ones turn sticky, cling to each other and tear when you try to separate them.
2. Toss in Oil
Put them in a bowl with the oil, garlic powder, salt and pepper and toss gently until each one has a thin, even coat. This step matters more than it looks; dry frozen dough bakes hard instead of crisp.
3. Arrange in One Layer
Spread the pierogies in the basket without overlapping. A little touching at the edges is fine, but stacked pierogies stay pale where they meet.
4. Air Fry and Shake
Cook at 200°C / 400°F for 10–12 minutes, shaking the basket gently or turning them halfway. They are ready when they look puffed and golden with crisp, slightly blistered edges.
5. Top and Serve
Serve hot with caramelized onions, a spoon of sour cream and a scatter of chives.
- The filling gets very hot, so let pierogies cool for 2 minutes before biting into them.
- Do not skip the oil; dry frozen dough turns hard and chalky instead of crisp.
- If one bursts, the filling can stick to the basket. A perforated liner helps if this happens often.
- Check the package for allergens; most pierogies contain wheat, dairy and egg.
Air Fryer vs Boiled vs Pan-Fried
Boiled pierogies are soft and tender but fairly plain. Pan-fried pierogies are rich and crispy but need plenty of butter and regular turning. Air fryer pierogies land in between: crisp and golden with a buttery taste, using a single tablespoon of oil and almost no effort. If you like crispy filled pasta, our Air Fryer Toasted Ravioli uses the same idea.
Caramelized Onions in the Air Fryer
Onions are the classic topping, and you can make them in the same machine. Toss one thinly sliced onion with a teaspoon of oil and a pinch of salt and air fry at 180°C / 355°F for 10–12 minutes, stirring twice, until soft and golden. Tip them into a bowl, then cook the pierogies. The onions stay warm while the pierogies cook.
Topping Ideas
- Classic: caramelized onions and sour cream.
- Loaded: bacon, cheddar and spring onions.
- Party snack: serve with marinara or a garlic sour cream dip.
- Dinner plate: serve alongside sausages and sauerkraut.
